Since the late 1800s, five generations of the deGraffenried family have served the state of Alabama in either the executive, legislative, or judicial branches of government. In 1876, Thomas Jefferson Seay was elected to the Alabama State Senate, where he served for ten years. In 1886, he was elected governor and reelected in 1888. Edward deGraffenried served on the Alabama Constitutional Convention of 1901 and was legal advisor to Governor Emmett O’Neal. In 1911, Edward was seated on the Alabama Court of Appeals, and in 1912, he was appointed to the Alabama Supreme Court. His son, also named Edward, was a member of the United States Congress from 1949 to 1953, where he represented the 6th Congressional District. Ryan deGraffenried, Sr., served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1955 to 1958, the Alabama State Senate from 1959 to 1962, and an Alabama gubernatorial candidate in 1962 and 1966.
