The deGraffenried name has shaped Alabama politics for over 140 years. Our firm has the expertise and experience needed to meet our clients’ needs.
Since the late 1800s, five generations of the deGraffenried family have served the state of Alabama in either the executive, legislative or judicial branches of government. In 1876, Thomas Jefferson Seay was elected to the Alabama State Senate where he served for ten years. In 1886 he was elected governor and reelected in 1888. Edward deGraffenried was seated on the Alabama Supreme Court, served on the Alabama Constitutional Convention of 1901 and was later legal advisor to Governor B. B. Comer. His son, also named Edward, was a member of the United States Congress from 1949 to 1953 where he represented the 6th Congressional District. Ryan deGraffenried, Sr., served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1955 to 1958, the Alabama State Senate from 1959 to 1962 and was also an Alabama Gubernatorial candidate in 1962 and 1966. Ryan deGraffenried, Jr., was a member of the Alabama State Senate from 1978 to 1994 and served as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1986 to 1994. The integrity, leadership and wisdom shown by these men are an inspiration to our firm and we hold their ideals in the highest regard.
